Pelvic Floor Problems in Men
Pelvic floor issues in men can show up as changes in bowel, bladder, or sexual health, and they may even cause pelvic pain. Many of these challenges are linked to muscle dysfunction, which can often be improved with pelvic floor physical therapy.

Pelvic floor muscles have three essential jobs:

  • Contracting to maintain bowel and bladder control (continence)

  • Relaxing so we can comfortably empty the bladder or bowel

  • Stretching to allow for normal function, just like any other muscle in the body

I see pelvic pain in athletic men or men who spend a great deal of time sitting down. Urinary leaking is usually noted in men who have had prostate surgery.

Sexual dysfunction is usually present in both of these groups: the men who have pelvic pain and the men who are having leakage issues.

Research in both these groups of men extensively supports the use of pelvic floor therapy to improve symptoms and return to full function.
